The Carr Center Film Series also includes short film group screenings from various filmmakers, as well as a highlight night on July 30th for Music Composition in Filmmaking. In her role as the designated Entertainment Commissioner for District 1, appointed by the Detroit City Council, Hamilton's responsibilities include strengthening creative hubs and fostering community growth through arts and entertainment initiatives. She facilitates partnerships between District 1 businesses and crucial civic resources to support their entrepreneurial ventures. Moreover, Hamilton orchestrates events to showcase the dynamic arts and entertainment scene within District 1, aligning with her vision of making the northwest side a vibrant hub for artistic expression and collaboration.

Located in the historic Detroit neighborhood of Rosedale Park, Norwest Gallery of Art is dedicated to offering a diverse array of contemporary art and culture to culturally underserved communities in Detroit. As a prominent arts and culture hub in the city, Norwest Gallery of Art is resolute in its mission to establish a platform for creative expression among black and brown artists, enabling the residents to engage with contemporary arts and culture from around the world. Serving as a cultural nexus, Norwest Gallery of Art facilitates meaningful connections between the contemporary art sphere and the vibrant local creative community. Through exhibitions, art classes, artist dialogues, cultural lectures, BIPOC artists residencies, independent film screenings, and community partnerships, we actively contribute to our community’s artistic landscape. The Heart Stays Still with Holly Hazen @ Elevate Gallery

Join us to celebrate Holly Hazen’s project The Heart Stays Still at NOVA24 Sponsor The Art of Custom Framing’s exhibition space, Elevate Gallery!

Artist Statement

The aftermath of an intense divorce and the change in our family lifestyle altered my definition of what I called family. The relationships I have with my mother and father have gone through many different stages of rebuilding, and I had to accept my parents are people. With issues between my parents bubbling since I was born, there was no choice but to let that pot boil over and burn the view of my family and start a new life.

The Heart Stays Still depicts the collaborative efforts with my parents in slowly transitioning to our new lives after the divorce, and tells the story of accepting new realities. With my mother moving into her own place and learning independence, and my father moving into a house with another family and forgiving himself, I am creating a new beginning for myself and with both my parents.

Artist Bio

Holly Hazen is a photographer based in Detroit.Their photography explores the complexities of human relationships people have with the world and the relationships people have within themselves. Inspired by personal events, they create art to understand and process their emotions, and connect others to similar events that have happened to them where they can relate in their own way. Along with the complexity, they embrace the humor and positives of their surroundings in their work. Holly’s work has been featured internationally in exhibitions and publications, including The Big Picture Colorado, Alternative Processes, Philosophie Magazine, and Aeonian Magazine.

Come hungry! The Pink Flamingo will be serving delicious food for sale throughout the event. Find yourself entranced, disturbed, or somewhere in between. Nothing here is quite what it seems.

PhotoWalk with Detroit PhotoWalk @ The Belt

Two worlds collide to take over Detroit for a very special walk with the friends from Detroit Photowalk July 19th 6-8pm. Meeting place will be The BELT Detroit. Come hang out and meet some new friends!

While we’re at the Belt, don’t miss featured Public Matter artist Genevieve Gaignard’s work highlighted throughout the alley! More information from Library Street Collective:

Library Street Collective’s 2024-2025 iteration of Public Matter is curated by Allison Glenn and features the work of artist Genevieve Gaignard. Gaignard’s photography and collage-based practices reference pop-culture, art history, and the artist’s personal experiences as a biracial Black woman. The selection of self-portraits on view are from different series, where the artist has manipulated her clothing, make-up, and hair to present versions of herself that undermine, question, and poke fun at beauty standards, social hierarchies, and, at times, phenotypic assumptions of race. With Compton Contrapposto, for example, we see Gaignard’s character donning a blonde afro, standing in front of a green Cadillac Deville. The character’s contrapposto–or counter pose–was invented in the early 5th century by the Greeks, often used in large figurative sculpture and paintings. Created in front of a Deville in the Compton neighborhood of Los Angeles, the birthplace of notable rappers Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, and Ice Cube, the title’s clever alliteration points to a bricolage of influences underscored by Gaignard’s intersectional identity.

Spectrums Unseen by Connery McDowell @ Voyeur Bordello

Spectrums Unseen - A Solo Infrared exhibition by Connery McDowell on July 18th from 6pm- 9pm at Voyeur Bordello.

This exhibition in partnership with NOVA24 | Photo + Film Festival showcases hauntingly beautiful photography that explores the environmental crises reshaping our world—through the eerie, otherworldly lens of infrared photography. This immersive collection captures the hidden effects of ecological damage, revealing a landscape transformed not just physically, but emotionally.

Infrared light, invisible to the human eye, uncovers ghostly patterns of destruction: forests that appear vibrant but are dying, waters reflecting unnatural tones, and skies heavy with invisible pollutants. The images feel like echoes from a parallel world—familiar, yet unsettling. The result is a body of work that is both achingly beautiful and profoundly disturbing.

Join us for a compelling evening of art, nature, distraction, and conversation.

For the fifth installment in their monthly series, Nick and Darian (both from Back Alley Cinema and MCCS) will demonstrate how a special lens doubles the width of a photographic image by means of anamorphosis, a cinematographic technique which has seen use in CinemaScope, Panavision, and other well-known processes for eight decades, and how it compares to the aspect ratios of ‘Flat’ films, including those adapted for cropped widescreen and the infamous practice of Pan & Scan. PhotoWalk w/Barely Hispanic @ PhotoHouse

Grab your camera and join us on an exploration of the area surrounding PhotoHouse!

In our second of a small series of photo walks across Detroit, the NOVA24 team is meeting up with visual artists at PhotoHouse, a studio, workshop, and hangout spot that’s established itself as a true home for Detroit’s community of creatives. After spending a little time inside the studio, we’ll be leading the group with the help of the House’s own Xavier Cuevas, better known as Barelyhispanic. Barelyhispanic is a Detroit-born lens based visual artist that showcases his love for his friends, his home, and his Puerto Rican heritage through beautifully grounded depictions of the city and its people. As the founder of PhotoHouse, Cuevas works towards balancing and embracing both sides of his identity as he tells his story, and helps others tell theirs, too.

Get ready to chat with local artists (or reacquaint yourself with some friends) as we stroll around starting at 4PM. There’s no fee to enter, but don’t forget to bring your own equipment, a keen eye, and some comfortable shoes!

Alter Egos & Inner Echos | Closing @ Voyeur Bordello

Alter Egos & Inner Echoes is a bold exploration of self through the lens of contemporary art. This curated exhibition invites artists to peel back the layers of persona and perception, revealing the raw mechanics of self-construction and the unfiltered noise beneath the surface. Through painting, photography, sculpture, performance, digital media, and beyond, the show becomes a kaleidoscope of human experience—where alter egos take shape and inner chaos finds form.

From fragmented reflections to imagined personas, this exhibition becomes a mirror of transformation, emotion, and the inner dialogues that shape who we are. Whether through abstraction, realism, or something entirely in between, each piece offers a glimpse into the personal and the performative, the seen and the secret.

What does it mean to see oneself? To be seen? Alter Egos & Inner Echoes challenges viewers and creators alike to consider the self not as a fixed image, but as a fluid, evolving narrative.

Alter Egos & Inner Echos @ Voyeur Bordello

For The Billionth Time Today - Film Screening @ Detroit Public Library

“For The Billionth Time Today” is a multidisciplinary generational horror film combining several forms of media from live action to experimental animation and archival footage. This dreamlike coming of age epic uses deeply surreal imagery and atmospheres in order to bring a unique sense of closure to one’s adolescence. The project also touches heavily on grief, derealization and the critical importance for emotional vulnerability in young men. Please join us on Saturday, June 28th from 2-5pm for a film screening and conversation at the Detroit Public Library, Main Branch!

Film Screening: Saturday, July 28th | 2-5pm

Statement from the Director:

The earliest ideas of “For The Billionth Time Today” originated from a journal series I produced two summers ago- primarily focusing on spontaneity and channeling my emotions about my own upcoming college graduation, entrance to adulthood and long term self deprecation. I became inspired to turn the words and images from my pages into a surrealist narrative piece, embracing the iterative process that helped the journals come to life in the beginning. Although so much of this film was heavily storyboarded, planned and scripted, another half was improvisational- embracing the authenticity of the actors’ real emotions and reactions, and utilizing it as a base for the dialogue. Through the conclusion of this piece, I have also been able to properly mourn all eras of my former self and heal that inner child that had to grow beyond his own torment.

Director Bio:

Jack Chisik is an experimental independent filmmaker/animator residing in Detroit, MI recently graduated from the College For Creative Studies. Chisik finds inspiration from the intersection of normal and bizarre. He appreciates narratives that challenge viewers to analyze the abstract with "out of bounds" visuals that shock the senses while also leaving an impactful deep resonance, often tapping into 21st century nostalgia. Chisik is intricately involved in all processes of filmmaking from conception, direction, visual and practical effects, and original scoring, leaving his unique touch on every project he puts forth.
