From Janay Bookhart’s response to a loved one with Alzheimer’s, to Mark McClelland’s documentation of Detroit’s modern punk scene, every artist is creating work due to some disruptive break, a crack that in order to process becomes the focus.

Want advice on getting more exposure? Need some guidance on how to network? In the second event of this series, NOVA24 Co-Executive Director Raymar will be moderating a panel discussion at the Usher’s New Look space at Michigan Central on Saturday, July 25th from 12-2 PM.

One of the biggest struggles artists can face is expanding their scope and getting more eyes on their work. During this panel discussion sponsored by College for Creative Studies, we’re determined to help fellow artists and creatives looking to get their foot in the door of the wider creative industry. 

We will explore best practices for connecting with industry experts, give insight on information artists should prepare alongside their work, explain how to look for and choose open calls effectively, and more! After the talk, there will be opportunities to ask questions and engage in dialogue. This free event is open to photographers and filmmakers of all ages, and emerging artists are highly encouraged to attend!

For more than a decade, Eric Hergenreder and Jon DeBoer have documented Detroit from two distinct perspectives: Eric by day and John by night. Though taken independently over many years, Detroit: Day & Night pairs images of the same buildings and scenes captured in daylight and at night, offering a side-by-side look at Detroit’s historic architecture as it shifts with the light.

In addition to the artwork, each building will feature a write-up providing historical context for each location alongside the photographs.

The gallery showcase runs from July 24th to July 29th. All artwork is available for purchase.

Step back into the strange at “Something's Still Not Quite Right,” our second outdoor experimental film screening hosted by the Pink Flamingo. Curated by NOVA24 Executive Board Member Tryst Red, these short films conjure eerie atmospheres, otherworldly imagery, and disjointed realities that linger long after they flicker out.

I Pray for You and Dream of Me Before is a photographic exhibition by Audrey Parsons, Kylie Zito, and Sierra R. Aguilar, examining and dissecting the nuances of grief. Across three separate experiences, they share nonlinear healing through the production of their work. With the guarantee of life, comes the guarantee of loss; whether that be of those we have loved, a version of ourselves, or a dream of different circumstances. Parsons, Zito, and Aguilar, take their individual experiences and find connectivity between themselves, young adulthood, and loss. These images explore the ache, solitude, and waves of feeling that coincide with their experiences through multiple photographic mediums allocating space for all versions of themselves: the before, the during, and the after. Girlhood, religion, and anger demand prominent space within the images creating an environment in which the only truth that can emerge is: to lose, is to love, and to love is to live.

Artist Bios

Audrey Parsons has found passion in photography for nearly six years, allowing her to gain experience across multiple styles and fields. She has developed a deep appreciation for capturing authentic moments and creating images that feel natural and meaningful. In doing so she has exhibited with galleries such as Ninety-Seven Modern, and been awarded two Scholastic Honorable Mentions as well as the Scholastic Silver Key. Outside of photography, Parsons enjoys reading, writing, playing guitar, and spending quality time with the people she loves.

Kylie Zito is a fine artist based in Detroit, Michigan, having graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography at the College for Creative Studies. Her work delves into themes of womanhood, human experience, and belonging, crafting powerful visual narratives. Kylie’s work challenges conventional perspectives, celebrating the complexity of identity and encouraging deep introspection and personal reflection. As her artistic voice evolves, she remains dedicated to creating evocative pieces that foster connection, empathy, and understanding.

Sierra R. Aguilar (b. 2001) is a multidisciplinary artist emphasizing kinetic emotion across mediums. Living and working in Michigan, Aguilar received her BFA in Photography with a minor in Printmaking from the Savannah College of Art and Design in spring of 2023, and a MA in Modern and Contemporary Art History from Azusa Pacific University in 2025. Alongside a daily personal practice, curatorial projects, and editorial participation in the photographic platform Lenscratch, Aguilar is always striving to further her relationship with the current art world in order to create a more inclusive and approachable field.

AURORA II, a Projection Gallery + Artist Panel held at the Detroit Public Library, invites you to explore current innovations in photography in an inviting and conversational space.

Please join us for this free Cyanotype workshop, sponsored by Savannah College of Art and Design!

Explore cyanotype, a historic photographic printing process developed in 1842 that uses light-sensitive chemistry and sunlight to create striking blue-and-white images. Originally embraced by botanists to document plants and algae, cyanotypes continue to inspire contemporary artists and photographers with their distinctive aesthetic and handcrafted nature. Participants will learn the basics of this fascinating process while creating their own cyanotype prints to take home.

Taught by Ashley Jones, this workshop is open to the public and for all skill levels! Limit of 20 participants, RSVP below!

Artist Bio

Ashley Jones is an artist and educator based in Greenville, SC. Her photographic practice includes large format photography and alternative processes to explore themes of nature, history, and place. Jones received her M.F.A. and M.A. from the Savannah College of Art and Design and her B.A. from the University of South Florida. Her photographs have been exhibited at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, SCAD Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, the University of South Carolina, and Northern State University.

Behind a small stage, Jamie Pittinos’ large-scale photographic work, The Augment, will hang as a backdrop for experimental video and performance art. The Augment is comprised of over 100 portraits, distorted using chemigram techniques and scanography performed by the models themselves.

The headlining performer is Screen Tear, a live video act engineered by Jolyne Kraepel, which will be projected onto Pittinos’ installation, acting as a final level of collaborative distortion. In addition to Screen Tear, Yvonne Pruneau, a talented composer and one of the models appearing in The Augment, will perform. Local noise music act Legs of The Fly will also perform, alongside more experimental film projections. It is a night of artists supporting artists amidst chaos.

Based in Detroit, MI, Jamie Pittinos creates photographic work with distortion, anonymity, and physicality at its core. Jamie’s practice transmits control from the photographer to the medium itself, breaking the classical photograph at every level. Similarly, Jolyne Kraepel’s Screen Tear integrates live video with electronic noise, feeding conventionally incompatible signals into each other, creating chaos. Electronic devices of a wide variety are brought to their breaking point by misread signals, causing erratic behavior otherwise impossible during their intended use. Both artists get their hands dirty, testing the limits of their chosen machines. The result is not merely a glitch, but a window into willful subversion. Peer into a broken invention, gaze upon the product of labor, feel the reverberations in your skin.

Doors to Mitch’s Prints in Madison Heights will open at 6pm, with light snacks and beverages.

Contemporary Codex is a celebration of the multitude of ways that we can engage with photography in the book form. This afternoon of conversation, held in conjunction with a photo book exhibition on the 3rd Floor of Detroit Public Library | Main Branch and curated in partnership between NOVA24 and Hamtramck gallery + photo book resource The Barbershop, examines the unique space that the physical page occupies in the photographic landscape.

Contemporary Codex, the exhibition, will be on display through Wednesday, August 12th on the 3rd Floor of Detroit Public Library | Main Branch.
